Impeachment Task ForceThis group will consider the position of Democrats on the impeachment of the President and other high officials for actions which are broadly recognized as impeachable offenses, e.g. lying to Congress about the war, breaking international law on torture, illegally spying on our citizens, and removing Constitutional checks on presidential power. There is action in Congress by Rep. Conyers and Sen. Feingold, and 5 state Democratic parties and a number of town councils have endorsed the move, and polls now show large numbers of the public agree. Proponents feel that taking this position can reactivate the Democrats as a strong opposition force, expressing the outrage felt by many Americans and helping Democrats to win the Congressional majority needed to actually accomplish the feat. Opponents feel that the effort will fail and may have negative consequences. At its first meeting on April 3, the group decided that there is a strong case for Democrats favoring impeachment, both because it is morally right, and as a strategy to help create the "Democratic tsunami" in the 2006 election. It is recognized that others in the PCDO may not agree, and dialogue will continue about this. The group is planning various activities to educate Democrats and the public about the issue.
